A foreign woman is the central figure here, which sets this sheet apart from the many Yokohama views that focus on the port's streets and shipping. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only in 1859, and its newly arrived merchants, diplomats and soldiers were a novelty that Japanese print artists eagerly portrayed. The sheet is signed by Issen Yoshikazu, a member of the Utagawa school, and the carving is attributed to Hori Take. A crease obscures part of the title, but the inscriptions label the figures as a foreigner and a foreign woman, and the subject headings point to soldiers' wives in the port.
