Foreign residents and their possessions are the focus here. The inscriptions name an American clock and a "photographic mirror," the early Japanese term for a camera. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only a year or two earlier, and its treaty-port settlements brought in merchants, diplomats and their families, whose imported goods fascinated Japanese print buyers. Issen Yoshikazu, a pupil of Kuniyoshi, was one of several artists who turned these novelties into a popular genre of Yokohama views. The seal date points to about 1860, when the series was being issued.
