A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors are the two subjects this drawing is catalogued under, a pairing that points to the years after Japan opened its ports to Western trade in the 1850s. Tokyo, still called Edo until 1868, was changing quickly, and bridges like this one were both working crossings and places where newcomers paused to look. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but it also gives a date of 1750, which falls before his working years and suggests that the date or attribution needs checking. The figures and the bridge's construction may offer further clues about when and by whom it was drawn.
