A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, which sets it apart from the figure studies around it. The credited artist, Isoda Koryūsai, was a ukiyo-e painter and printmaker active in the later eighteenth century, best known for elegant portraits of women. The record's dates conflict: 1750 for the work, while its subject headings place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan was opening its ports to foreign traders. That gap is worth keeping in mind when reading the scene.
