Its catalog subjects point to a drawbridge in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there, a setting that stands apart from the botanical material also noted in the record. The dates do not fully agree, however. The record gives 1750, while the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, and the Tokyo subject heading covers 1850 to 1900. Koryūsai worked in the Edo period, when the city was still called Edo, so the Tokyo label likely reflects later cataloguing. Drawbridges and foreign travelers were common subjects in the late Edo and early Meiji years, as Japan opened its ports to outside visitors.
