The record for this untitled drawing names drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, with subject dates of 1850 to 1900, which points to the late Edo and early Meiji years, when Western travelers were first arriving in numbers. The catalog also dates it to 1750, but the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, was active from about 1764 to 1788, so the earlier date is likely approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist known for prints of women and courtly scenes, and his drawings show the same careful line work. Because the record is mixed, the drawing is best read as a study of the city's bridges and the people who crossed them, with the exact date still open to question.
