The record ties this drawing to a drawbridge and to foreign visitors in Tokyo during 1850 to 1900, but its 1750 date and the artist's listed working years of 1764 to 1788 do not match that setting. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-based painter and printmaker of the ukiyo-e tradition, known for graceful figure studies and flower subjects, so the botanical note fits his practice more closely than the city view does. The city was called Edo until 1868, when it took the name Tokyo, and drawbridges over its canals and moats were a common sight for travelers. Viewers should weigh the catalog dates with care.
