Catalogued only as a Japanese drawing, this sheet carries subject tags for drawbridges in Tokyo and for foreign visitors, both pointing to the period from 1850 to 1900, when Japan reopened to Western trade and Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868. The record also gives a date of 1750, yet it credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based artist active from about 1764 to 1788, so the earlier date is probably approximate or a cataloguing error. Koryūsai is best known for bijin-ga, or studies of elegant women, and for scenes of everyday life in Edo. Viewers should weigh the subject tags against the artist's dates when placing this work in time.
