A drawbridge and foreign visitors in Tokyo set this drawing apart from the courtesan and actor scenes common on the board. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based artist active from 1764 to 1788, but dates the sheet to 1750 and its subjects to 1850 to 1900, so the timing is unsettled. The later range fits the period after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s, when foreigners began arriving in greater numbers. The listed abacus hints at the everyday commerce that Japanese pictures often showed alongside city landmarks.
