This drawing is catalogued as a view of a drawbridge in Tokyo, with the subject headings also noting foreign visitors. The record is inconsistent on its date: it gives 1750, yet the attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai, was active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900. Koryūsai was known for ukiyo-e images of women and Edo street life, and the city was called Edo until 1868. Foreign visitors became a more common sight after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s, so the subject headings may reflect that later period.
