Few pictures on this board show a working vessel as plainly as this view of the S.S. City of Savannah, a steamship that carried passengers and freight between Savannah and northern ports. It was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, the large-format negative the Detroit Publishing Company used for its commercial views of towns, rivers and waterfronts, which it sold to travelers and collectors in the early 1900s. The plate is marked with the ship's name and a Detroit Publishing number, and the negative later passed to the Colorado State Historical Society. Steamers like this one were a common sight at Savannah's docks before the First World War.
