Tybee Island, a barrier island at the mouth of the Savannah River, is the setting here, and its sandy shore is framed by palmetto plants, a low palm native to the Georgia and Carolina coast. Around 1900, visitors commonly reached Tybee from Savannah as the island developed into a seaside resort. This view survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and tourist destinations from the 1890s into the 1920s. Its focus on plants and open sand offers a quieter picture of the Georgia coast than the crowded bathing scenes common in resort views.
