Forsyth Park's fountain is the feature that most people picture when they think of Savannah's squares and parks, and this glass negative captures it as it stood around 1904. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of photographs of American towns and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made the image for its commercial catalog of views, often sold as hand-colored prints and postcards. The fountain, set in the park's central promenade, was a popular gathering spot for residents and visitors, and the photograph shows how the park's formal layout and shade trees framed it.
