Few sports of the 1880s drew women onto public courts as quickly as lawn tennis, and this 1887 halftone shows a Staten Island women's club at play. The picture ran as an illustration in *Outing*, a New York monthly devoted to sport and outdoor life that regularly showed readers the newest games and the people playing them. Lawn tennis had reached America only about a decade earlier, and the women's clubs that formed around it reflected a broader move toward organized athletics for women.
