Staten Island played a central part in the early history of American lawn tennis, and Mary Ewing Outerbridge is usually credited with bringing the game from Bermuda there in 1874. By 1887, when this halftone was published in the sporting magazine *Outing*, women were playing the game on the island in organized clubs, and this picture records that change. Halftone reproduction let magazines of the period print photographic images on the page alongside their text.
