Few sports images from the 1880s show women on the court as plainly as this halftone, which appeared in the 1887 volume of *Outing*, a New York magazine devoted to outdoor recreation. The lawn tennis it shows was still a fairly new pastime in America, imported from England about a decade earlier and spreading through resort towns and suburban clubs. Magazines of the period treated women's play as a novelty worth illustrating. The caption card lists the subjects as women's sports and tennis, but the record is unverified, so details about the players and grounds remain uncertain.
