A club of women playing lawn tennis on Staten Island is the subject of this 1887 picture, which was reproduced as a halftone illustration in volume 11 of *Outing*, a sporting magazine of the period. Lawn tennis had arrived in America only about 13 years earlier, and women's clubs were beginning to form around the game in the late 1880s. The scene offers a glimpse of the leisure pursued by suburban families on Staten Island. The halftone process, which let photographic detail print alongside text, also shows how quickly magazines were changing during that decade.
