This is less a view of a place than a route drawn across the continent: the line of travel that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark followed from St. Louis up the Missouri, over the Rockies, and down to the Pacific between 1804 and 1806. It was published in 1814, several years after the expedition returned, and drew on Clark's own survey work to chart rivers, mountain passes, and the lands of Native nations for a public eager to learn about the West. Lewis, who is remembered along the Natchez Trace, never saw the map. He died in 1809 at Grinder's Stand in Tennessee, five years before it appeared.
