This map shows Nashville itself, the city at the northern end of the Natchez Trace, rather than the wilderness road the board usually features. Its 1897 date falls in a period when Nashville was a major railroad and commercial hub and a growing regional center. The city had been Tennessee's capital since 1843, and the Trace, a route first used by Native peoples and later by settlers and traders, ran from Natchez to Nashville. A town plan from this moment helps show where travelers ended their journey and how the city had spread by the late 1890s.
