Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark are shown presiding over a council with Native American leaders, a scene the expedition held repeatedly as it moved west. The etching appeared on page 26 of Patrick Gass's account of the 1804 to 1806 journey, printed by Matthew Carey in Philadelphia in 1810. Gass was a sergeant on the expedition, and his journal was one of the first published narratives of the trip, so the image reflects how the public first pictured the explorers' dealings with the tribes they met.
