Few fairs of the era were as sprawling as the one shown here, the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis's Forest Park. It opened in April 1904 to mark the centennial of the 1803 land deal that doubled the young nation's territory, and it drew visitors from across the country and abroad. The fair also hosted the third modern Olympic Games, a detail that adds to its significance. A wide view like this one shows the scale of the temporary city built for the occasion, much of which was taken down after the fair closed that December.
