Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river city of about 20,000 people whose economy rested on cotton, river shipping, and rail connections to the surrounding Delta. Its name, however, was tied to the Civil War siege of 1863, when Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant closed in on the Confederate garrison until it surrendered on July 4. Congress had established Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899, and through the first decade of the twentieth century states sent veterans back to dedicate monuments marking where their regiments had fought. This battlefield view shows the ground that local residents and visiting Union and Confederate veterans knew as a place of memorial tours, reunions, and growing tourist traffic, and it captures a town that was still living with the memory of the siege nearly half a century later.
