Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river town of about twenty thousand people whose levees, cotton warehouses, and rail yards depended on the Mississippi. Forty-seven years earlier, Ulysses S. Grant's army had besieged the city from May to July 1863, and its surrender on July 4 gave the Union control of the river. Congress created the Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899, and by 1910 veterans' organizations from northern states had placed monuments along the roads and ridges, drawing reunion parties and tourists by train and steamboat. Local residents took pride in the battlefield as a place of memory while also promoting the city as a modern commercial center. This view shows the wooded ridges and open ground where the armies had dug their trenches.
