Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river city still shaped by the siege it endured in 1863, when Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant pressed the Confederate garrison until its surrender on July 4 opened the Mississippi River to Northern traffic. By the time this panorama was made, the ground had been set aside as a national military park, and states were placing monuments along the ridges and roads where regiments had fought. The city's working life centered on the river landing, cotton and timber shipping, and the railroads that linked it to the surrounding Delta. Local residents knew the bluffs and trench lines as a place of memory, and veterans from both armies still returned to walk the lines they had once held.
