In 1910 Vicksburg, Mississippi, was a river town on high bluffs above the Mississippi, where cotton, timber, and rail freight moved through its landings and yards. The battlefield beyond the city limits had been set aside as a national military park in 1899, and by this decade veterans from both the Union and Confederate armies were returning to walk its ridges and trenches. States were raising memorials among the earthworks, and newly built roads and markers were turning the old siege lines into a place visitors could follow. Residents knew the ground as the site of the 1863 siege, which ended with the city's surrender on July 4 and opened the river to Union traffic.
