Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river port whose economy rested on cotton, river freight, and rail connections across the lower Mississippi valley. The battlefield around it had become a national park only about a decade earlier, when Congress established the Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899 to preserve the ground where Ulysses S. Grant's army besieged the Confederate garrison through the summer of 1863. The city surrendered on July 4 of that year, and the event shaped how residents understood their town's past. By the time this panorama was made, Northern states had been placing regimental monuments and marking lines of entrenchment across the hills, drawing veterans to reunions and visitors to the park's roads. Local people took pride in the carefully kept grounds, even as the memory of the siege remained contested.
