Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river town of cotton, timber, and rail freight, still living with the memory of the 1863 siege that ended its Confederate defense on July 4, 1863. Congress had created the Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899, and by the 1900s states that had fought there were placing monuments on the ridges and ravines where their regiments had dug in. This view of the battlefield ground would have been familiar to local residents, many of whom had grown up with the earthworks, the park roads, and the veterans who came back each summer. For a Mississippi town of that era, the battlefield was both a source of civic pride and a reminder of the war's cost.
