Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river town whose economy rested on cotton, timber, and freight moving along the Mississippi and through its railroad yards. The city still lived with the memory of the 1863 siege, which ended with its surrender on July 4 and gave the Union control of the river. Congress had established the Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899, and states whose regiments fought there were placing monuments along the miles of trenches and roads the armies had dug. Residents watched the battlefield become a destination for veterans and visitors who arrived by train and steamboat. For the people of the town, the landscape around them was both a source of local pride and a daily reminder of the war that had reshaped their community.
