Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river town of cotton, timber, and rail freight, sitting on high bluffs above the Mississippi where the 1863 siege had decided the Civil War in the West. Congress had created Vicksburg National Military Park in 1899, and through the first decade of the 1900s states sent veterans back to place monuments and mark the lines their regiments had held. Local people lived alongside this landscape of earthworks, ravines, and memorials, and many knew it through the veterans who visited each year to walk their old positions. This view of the battlefield shows the ground as it looked to those who had fought over it, with the Union and Confederate lines still legible in the terrain.
