Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1910 was a river town of about 20,000 people, still shaped by the siege that ended there on July 4, 1863. Congress had established the battlefield as a national military park in 1899, and by 1910 veterans from both Union and Confederate armies were returning to the ridges and ravines to see the monuments their states had raised. The town's economy rested on cotton, river freight on the Mississippi, and rail lines that linked the bluffs to the surrounding countryside. Many residents remembered the wartime bombardment, when civilians dug caves into the hillsides to survive, and that memory influenced how the battlefield was preserved and shown to visitors.
