Lewis appears here in profile, facing right, in a small engraving made in Washington, D.C., around 1805. The outline was traced with a mechanical device, the physionotrace, and engraved on copper by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, who made many profile likenesses of prominent Americans in the early republic. Lewis had recently led the Corps of Discovery with William Clark, and he later governed the Louisiana Territory. He died in 1809 on the Natchez Trace, the old road that this landmark recalls.
