This portrait of Meriwether Lewis reproduces a drawing by Saint-Mémin, the French-born artist known for precise profile likenesses made with a mechanical device called the physiognotrace. Lewis led the expedition to the Pacific with William Clark, and he died at age 35 in October 1809 at Grinder's Stand on the Natchez Trace, the old travel route the parkway now follows. This halftone print, made between 1890 and 1940, shows how a fine drawing could travel into books and magazines once photomechanical reproduction became common.
