A photographic copy of a painting by Charles Willson Peale, the Philadelphia artist whose portrait of Meriwether Lewis is held in Independence Hall, gives this picture its particular link to the explorer. Lewis co-led the Corps of Discovery with William Clark from 1804 to 1806, and Peale's likeness helped shape how later generations pictured him. Lewis died in 1809 at Grinder's Stand along the Natchez Trace in Tennessee, the road now preserved as the Natchez Trace Parkway. According to an older caption card, this reproduction dates to about 1903, a time when interest in the expedition was growing.
