Few Civil War images show the defenses of Mobile from above, and this bird's-eye view depicts the Confederate works that Union forces took under Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby in April 1865. Mobile had been cut off from the open Gulf since Adm. David Farragut's fleet won Mobile Bay in August 1864, but the city held out until the last weeks of the war. Panoramic maps like this one, drawn from an imagined high vantage point, let viewers trace the fortifications, streets and waterfront together. Its value lies in showing how the city and its outer lines of earthworks related to one another at the moment the Confederacy's final Gulf stronghold fell.
