Drawn from a high oblique angle, this map shows Mobile's land defenses as they were built during the Civil War, when the Confederacy fortified the port city on Mobile Bay. Mobile was a vital outlet for cotton and a center for blockade running, so its batteries and earthworks mattered to the Confederate war effort. The bird's-eye view was a popular 19th-century format because it let viewers read the city's streets, waterfront and fortifications at a glance. The map's 1862 to 1864 date range covers the years when Union naval pressure on the Gulf coast grew steadily.
