A triangulation network that reaches from Mobile Bay to the Mississippi River delta is a rare kind of record, since it ties two distant Gulf coast landmarks into a single system of measured angles. Surveys like this, drawn in 1862, fixed the exact positions of headlands, channels, and shoals along the shore. That work had practical value: after Union forces took New Orleans that spring, navies and army engineers needed accurate charts to move ships and troops through the shallow waters and barrier islands of the region. Coast Survey work continued through the war for this reason.
