Few cities of the 1880s were drawn from as high a vantage as New Orleans, where the Mississippi bends around the city and the levee fills with steamboats loading cotton and sugar for markets upriver and overseas. Currier & Ives, the New York firm best known for its sentimental lithographs, issued this color view around 1885, with Lake Pontchartrain visible on the distant horizon. Such panoramas let residents and visitors take in an entire city at once, and the crowded waterfront is the detail most worth studying, since it shows how central river commerce was to the port.
