This color lithograph of New Orleans is drawn from the tower of St. Patrick's Church, the Irish Catholic parish church in the city's American Quarter. From that height, the viewer looks out over a dense grid of roofs, streets, and church spires toward the Mississippi River, which made New Orleans one of the busiest ports in the country. The print was drawn by J.W. Hill and Smith, lithographed by B.F. Smith, Jr., and published in New York by Smith Brothers & Co. in 1852. City views like this were popular in the 1850s, when the South's commercial importance and rapid growth drew wide interest.
