Looking out from the tower of St. Michael's Church, this view runs over the rooftops of Charleston toward the harbor, a vantage that made the steeple one of the city's best-known lookouts. Completed in 1761 on Broad Street, the church's white spire rose above the surrounding houses and served as a landmark for ships approaching the port. Charleston's wealth rested on rice, indigo and Atlantic trade, so a view like this one shows a city whose fortunes depended on the water beyond its wharves.
