The piers and wharves along the Charleston waterfront are the particular focus of this north-western view, which the record names as one of its main subjects. Charleston was among the busiest Atlantic ports of the antebellum South, and its harbor handled large volumes of cotton, rice, and other goods bound for markets at home and abroad. William Keenan, who drew, lithographed, and published the view, was a working Charleston printmaker, and the image gives a useful picture of how the city's shoreline looked in the decades before the Civil War.
