Few views of the Corpus Christi encampment survive from above, and this one shows the camp in careful detail. Captain Daniel Powers Whiting of the 7th Infantry drew the scene in October 1845, when Gen. Zachary Taylor's army of occupation was camped on the Texas coast after the United States annexed Texas. Taylor's men later marched to the Rio Grande in 1846, a move that helped bring on the Mexican War. The hand-colored lithograph, cut on stone by C. Parsons and published in New York by G. & W. Endicott around 1847, offers a rare record of how a temporary military town was laid out on open ground.
