Alamo Plaza, the open square in front of the old mission chapel, was the subject here, and the chapel's famous facade stands at the edge of the scene. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced stereographs like this one for viewers in parlors across the country around 1909. Texas had acquired the Alamo chapel from the U.S. Army in 1883, so by this time it was a site of public memory as well as a working part of downtown San Antonio. The paired images of such views give a sense of depth that a flat print cannot, and the plaza's street traffic and buildings show a city in transition.
