Percy Moran's painting of the Battle of the Alamo is preserved here as a color photomechanical reproduction, the kind of print that brought history paintings into homes and schools in the early twentieth century. The Gerblach Barklow Company of Joliet, Illinois, made the reproduction, which was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. The scene recalls the 1836 siege of the former mission in San Antonio, when Mexican troops under Santa Anna overran the Texian defenders after about thirteen days. By around 1912, the fight had become a national symbol of courage and sacrifice, and this image shows how artists and publishers kept that story alive for a broad public.
