Percy Moran's painting of the Alamo, reproduced here as a color print around 1912, shows the mission compound in San Antonio during the 1836 siege. The Texian defenders held the old Spanish mission for 13 days, from late February to early March 1836, before Mexican forces under Santa Anna overran it. By the early twentieth century, the battle had become a central story in Texas memory, and painters often returned to it when they wanted to show courage against long odds. This print was made by the Gerlach-Barklow Company of Joliet, Illinois, which produced many color reproductions of popular paintings for wide sale.
