The Alamo, the former mission chapel in San Antonio, is the focus here, shown in a broad view that takes in its old limestone walls and the streets around it. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued this stereograph around 1926, when stereo cards were a popular way to see distant places in three dimensions through a viewer at home. The Alamo had been a symbol of Texas independence since the 1836 siege, and by the 1920s it was drawing growing numbers of visitors, which is part of why a commercial publisher thought it worth recording. Look for the pairing of the church front with the surrounding city life, a reminder of how the monument sat within a working town.
