The Alamo's chapel facade is the focus here, shown in 1909 with figures and a cart arranged in front of its weathered limestone walls. By then the former mission compound in San Antonio had already become a symbol of Texas independence, since the 1836 siege and battle there were remembered as a turning point in the fight against Mexican rule. The chapel itself dates to the early 1700s, and the scene captures a moment when the building was still an everyday part of a working city rather than the carefully preserved shrine it later became. The cart and the people around it offer a useful glimpse of street life in San Antonio at the start of the twentieth century.
