Seen from the water, Charleston rises as a low skyline of church steeples, which is why travelers and port officials of the 19th century often judged the city by its approach. The harbor where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet has long shaped the town's fortunes, drawing merchants, rice and cotton shipments, and, later, Union and Confederate attention during the Civil War. Charleston's compact layout of church spires and waterfront warehouses reflects a port city that grew rich before the Revolution and kept its colonial street pattern for generations. Look closely at the shoreline to see how the city's wealth and its harbor defenses were tied together.
