The long, narrow sheet looks across Charleston Harbor from Fort Wagner, the Confederate earthwork on the northern tip of Morris Island, and its panoramic format carries the eye from the batteries at the water's edge to the city's rooftops beyond. Confederate flags and harbor shipping place the scene in the Civil War years, when Charleston, where secession was declared in December 1860, sat at the center of the conflict. Fort Wagner became famous in July 1863, when Union troops, including the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, assaulted its walls and were driven back. The warm tone of the tan paper and the careful watercolor wash give the drawing its quiet, weathered character.
