Charleston's ruins from the Civil War are the subject here, and the record places the view in South Carolina between 1861 and 1865, though the print itself was made later. The city endured a long Union siege and repeated bombardment, and by the war's end large parts of its downtown had been burned or shattered by shelling, including the great fire of February 1865 that consumed much of the commercial district. Photographs like this one were among the first to show ordinary Americans the physical cost of the conflict in a Southern city, and they remain valuable records of how the war reshaped the urban landscape.
