This pencil drawing shows a synagogue with a prominent tower, a building that stands out in Charleston's streetscape of church spires and piazzas. Charleston's Jewish community dates to the colonial period, and Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is among the oldest congregations in the United States. Its members made national history in 1824, when they formed the Reformed Society of Israelites, an early effort to modernize worship in English and adapt traditional practice. Drawings like this one record how the city's religious architecture looked before later changes, and they show the care that Charleston's congregations put into their public buildings.
